Throw The Bums In

I’m not a Democrat, so as far as I’m concerned, it’s up to the donkey party to select a presidential candidate I’ll vote for, and so far, they all look better than anyone the Republicans have in their lineup.

I haven’t voted for a Republican since the first go-round with W in 2000. Up until this year, I’ve always voted for the candidate that’s most fun to draw.

As politicians, they’re all the same, telling us what we want to hear and making promises they know they won’t keep, plus they tend to believe their own bullshit. Politics today is an exercise in legitimized prejudice (Don’t confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up.) It’s probably always been that way but it’s more obvious than ever.

I voted for Bush because Al Gore was a drag, as a cartoon subject and politically. I figured the country was at peace and the treasury had a surplus. What could possibly go wrong? Gore’s physical features were as exciting as his charisma, which was nil. John McCain and Mitt Romney were similar in that department.

Barack Obama’s caricature was lights out over any of the Republicans in 2008 and 2012 and as it turns out, I’ve agreed with his politics and approach to the office more often than any president in my lifetime. Trump and Cruz are fun to draw, but so is Bernie. I’m not happy with my Hillary caricature and I haven’t seen a great caricature of Hillary by any editorial cartoonist drawing today. I don’t know what it is about her face. I had a great caricature of her back when she was First Lady, but I can’t just add lines and wrinkles to her face and get a likeness I like.

Having said all that, there’s no way I could vote for a Republican this year no matter how much fun they are to draw. I had the same trouble with Vice President Dan Quayle, but I finally came up with a caricature that perfectly expressed my opinion about him. Unfortunately, it was during his last year in office. Oh well, better late than never clever.
